RayKo’s 10th annual juried plastic camera show will include images from around the world by 89 different artists! Along with the juried show, we will also exhibit photographs by the featured artists from our past 9 years of fantastic plastic shows: Veronika Lukasova, Aline Smithson, Michael Emery, Roy Berkowitz, Michael Borek, Thomas Alleman, Robert Holmgren, Sam Grant, Michelle Bates, James Rohan, Ernie Button, Jennifer Shaw and Gordon Stettinius. It’s a landmark show, so we’re thrilled to show some history in what could be the last exhibition ever at RayKo Photo Center. Come celebrate these artists and all this film photography this spring!

“L’Avenir (Things to Come)” is a group show by the CCSF Photo Club where members were asked to submit photographs showcasing the type of photography they are passionate about and plan to pursue. L’Avenir is the French word for the future and we wanted to honor Frenchman, Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre who is not only credited as the father of photography but made it accessible to all. The photographs displayed here are just a small sampling of our members’ talents and the work that comprise their portfolios. Techniques exhibited in this showcase are examples of skills learned in the many different photography courses offered here at CCSF.

The word minimalism was first used in the english language in the early 20th century to describe a 1913 painting by Kasimir Malevich of a black square on a white background. The term was referring not to what Malevich put into the piece but rather what he left out.
Similarly in other fields in the visual arts, music and architecture, the term has come to represent the concept of stripping everything down to its essential quality, getting rid of what is unnecessary.
This group of works is inspired by these concepts. Each artist has focused their lens on a subject, reducing it down to its essence and by removing the extraneous, creating a sense of clarity.
